I´ve walked by Der Hahn ist tot! many times and always thought “This place looks lovely, I really need to try it!”. When my friend Petra from Düsseldorf decided to come for a visit to Berlin, I finally had a good reason to go. Petra loves French food the same as I do and it turned out to be the perfect choice. My best friend Bea (another French food lover :)) also joined us.
Der Hahn ist tot!
Der Hahn ist tot! (Website) is a cute French & German influenced restaurant on beautiful Zionskirchplatz in Berlin Mitte. The name is really funny and if I translate it to English it will mean “The cock is dead!” haha :D.
The decoration is really sweet with pink flower wallpapers combined with rustic dark brown wooden chairs, retro lamps and antique madonna figures. In summer its lovely to sit outside on one of the pink vintage chairs with a view to Zionskirchplatz. You can almost get into holiday mood.
The 3-course menu
Der Hahn ist tot! offers a 3-course menu only. You can choose between 2 starters and 3 main dishes (the menu only varies slightly). The dessert is the same for everyone. Between the starter and the main dish you will also get a big bowl of green salad with lentils and fruit accompanied by 3 different types of delicious bread (I loved the onion bread!) and butter.
Petra invited me and Bea for a summer apertif (a non-alcoholic red bittersweet something that looked gorgeous in a beautiful crystal glass).
For the starter I decided to go for the tomato soup with parmesan. The soup is offered inside as self service, so you can take as much as you want. I was really happy with my soup. Together with the warm bread and a dash of pepper – wonderful!
For the main dish we all decided to take the Coq Au Vin. It´s one of my favourite French dishes and also the speciality of Der Hahn ist tot! For sure the Coq Au Vin was the best one I ever had and the size of the dish was very generous as well. We barely could finish it. But it´s so hard to stop eating when something is sooo good :).
As a dessert we got a semola pudding with summer berries. Luckily the portion was small, so we were able to make it.
The menu pric is 24€ excluding the drinks. You can check out the current menu here.
I will definitely be back!
