I like to sleep in unusual hotels and the idea of spending a night in a former cloister sounded perfect to me. Hotel Monasterio de San Francisco is located in the small town of Palma del Rio, situated between Sevilla and Cordoba (about 1 hour drive to both cities). There is not much to do in Palma del Rio itself which allows you to fully enjoy this beautiful hotel.
Hotel Monasterio de San Francisco
Hotel Monasterio de San Francisco (Website) is an old Franciscan monastery built in the 15th century and converted into a hotel during the 20th century without touching the original architecture. The hotel has 35 rooms, all decorated in a traditional and classic design.
We had a spacious room with basic interior including a double bed with a carved wooden top head. The highlight was the bathroom that was equipped with a huge oldfashioned blue & white tiled bathtub and 2 beautiful blue lion head water-taps. To get into the bathtub you had to use 2 stairs, it almost felt like a pool :).
There is a lot to discover at Hotel Monasterio de San Francisco such as the vegetated different courtyards, the impressive vaulted ceilings in the open hallways, beautiful old lamps and antique chairs and furnitures. One courtyard was adorned with palms, orange trees and cute wrought-iron tables. I enjoyed so much walking through the silent floors and admire all the lovely details. At the time of our visit there were not many guests, so it almost felt like being alone in the cloister. Especially at night it was a strange but romantic feeling.
The enchanted garden
The garden of Hotel Monasterio de San Francisco is a little green oasis. There are lots of orange trees, vegetable beds, a lovely little fountain and a hayfield where you can get sunbeds for taking a nap in the shade or reading a good book. I could have stayed here forever. In summer there is a pool as well but it was not open when we visited the hotel.
What I enjoyed most at Hotel Monasterio de San Francisco was the silence. I have never stayed in such a peaceful place. We had almost no internet signal and the only noise we could hear was the sound of birds. It is the perfect place to detox from the stressful city life and when you want to find back to a piece of mind or for some romantic time with your partner. I would love to come back here and spend some quiet days, enjoying the wonderful garden, reading and listening the nature.
